Pisonian conspiracy (AD 65)

Epicharis, a participant in the Pisonian conspiracy, led to torture (AD 65): engraving, 1853

In AD 65 a group of senators, equestrians and officers of the Guard planned to kill Nero in the circus. The conspiracy was betrayed by the freedman Milichus. Nero condemned many, Seneca among them (Tacitus, Annals 15.48–64). Among the conspirators were the consul-designate Plautius Lateranus and the praetorian prefect Faenius Rufus. The freedwoman Epicharis endured torture without betraying anyone (Annals 15.51–57).
