Vindex’s revolt (March AD 68)

In March AD 68 Vindex rebelled in Gaul, and soon after Galba in Hispania (Suetonius, Nero 40–42). For eight days Nero did not respond to the news from Gaul. When the Guard abandoned him, the Senate declared him an enemy of the state. Vindex was defeated at Vesontio by the legions of Verginius Rufus and took his own life, but the revolt could no longer be stopped. In the following weeks one province and army after another went over to Galba.
