Antonio Zanchi, The Death of Agrippina (1722), detail: a commander in armor

Anicetus (1st century AD): a freedman, Nero’s former tutor, commander of the fleet at Misenum.

He wants to serve the emperor and destroy Agrippina, whom he hates. Anicetus was the tutor of the young Nero and later commander of the fleet at Misenum. In AD 59, according to Tacitus, he prepared for Agrippina a ship with a mechanism meant to fall apart on the Bay of Naples. When Agrippina survived, his men finished her off in her villa.
