Livilla (d. AD 31)

Head attributed to Livilla

Livilla was Germanicus’s sister and the wife of Drusus, Tiberius’s son. According to Tacitus, who calls her Livia, Sejanus seduced her and drew her into plans of marriage and power (Annals 4.3). In AD 25 he asked Tiberius for permission to marry her. The emperor answered politely, but in such a way that scholars read it as a refusal (Tacitus 4.39–40, Fagan).

After the fall of Sejanus, a letter from his former wife Apicata accused Livilla of taking part in Drusus’s death. Dio writes that the emperor had her killed, but he also knows a version in which he spared her out of regard for her mother Antonia, and Antonia herself starved her daughter (58.11). The accusation cannot be confirmed.
