Temple of Peace (Templum Pacis) (dedicated AD 75)

A temple and square by the Forum that Vespasian built after the triumph of AD 71. The spoils from Judaea did not go to the treasury: according to Josephus the emperor gathered here paintings and statues that people had until then travelled all over the world to see, and beside them the golden vessels from the Temple in Jerusalem. The Book of the Law and the purple veils of the Holy of Holies he kept in his own palace. Josephus adds that the building was finished astonishingly fast. Dio dates the dedication to Vespasian’s sixth consulship, that is, AD 75. The place appears in the Vespasian episode, in the chapters “The Triumph” and “Money Doesn’t Stink”.
