Claudius proclaimed emperor (January 24–25, AD 41)

On January 24, AD 41, Caligula was killed. According to Suetonius, Claudius hid behind a curtain, and a soldier saw his feet, pulled him out and hailed him emperor (Claudius 10). Dio writes of a dark corner (60.1), Josephus of a narrow place (Antiquities of the Jews 19.1). The next day Claudius promised each soldier fifteen thousand sesterces.
