The Pact of Three (60 BC)

Pompey, Caesar and Crassus: a composite of busts

In the summer of 60 BC Caesar reconciled Pompey and Crassus and made an agreement with them that nothing in the state could be done against the wishes of any of the three. The agreement had no legal form. Varro called it a three-headed monster. Historians adopted the name First Triumvirate. A year later Caesar became consul, and the agreement was sealed by the marriage of Pompey to Julia, Caesar’s daughter (59 BC).
