Transcript

The Palatine, January twenty-fourth, AD forty-one.

Games are under way in the palace, and the emperor cannot decide whether to go to lunch.

Friends urge him, so at last he goes out.

He is to pass through a covered corridor, where two tribunes wait.

They are Cassius Chaerea and Cornelius Sabinus, tribunes of the Guard.

In the corridor boys brought from Asia are rehearsing their roles.

The emperor stops to encourage them.

According to Suetonius he wants to turn back and have the performance given at once.

But the head of the troupe complains of the cold, so the emperor goes on.
