Caecina (consul, AD 69)

Mummy portrait of a young man in a white tunic with a dark red stripe (clavus) and a Flavian hairstyle (AD 69–96): painting on wood, Manchester Museum. An image of the period; no portrait of this person survives.

Aulus Caecina Alienus led one of Vitellius’s armies across the Alps in AD 69. In the autumn, by then a consul, he occupied the camp at Hostilia and, after the betrayal of the fleet at Ravenna, ordered the soldiers to swear allegiance to Vespasian. The soldiers mutinied and put him in chains. After the Battle of Cremona he was released; Antonius Primus sent him to Vespasian. His later fate is told in the episode on Titus.
