Macro (Praetorian prefect, d. c. AD 38)

Detail of the relief of Praetorians from the Arch of Claudius (c. AD 51–52). No identified portrait of this person survives; the image is only related to them.

Macro, properly Quintus Naevius Cordus Sutorius Macro, commanded the Praetorian Guard after the fall of Sejanus. He read Tiberius’s will in the Senate and helped Gaius take sole power (Dio 59.1, 59.10). Suetonius repeats the rumor that Gaius won his favor through his wife Ennia, promising her marriage (Caligula 12).

After a few months Macro and Ennia died on the emperor’s orders. Dio writes that they were forced to take their own lives, Suetonius that their death was bloody and that the punishment fell on them for faithful service (Caligula 26).
