Vercingetorix (d. after 46 BC)

Vercingetorix, monument at Alise-Sainte-Reine (Aimé Millet, 1865)

In 52 BC Vercingetorix of the Arverni tribe became the leader of all the Gauls against Caesar. Plutarch writes his name as Vergentorix and says that his father was killed by his countrymen because they suspected him of aiming at tyranny.

After the defeat at Alesia he rode out of the city in his finest armor, circled the seated Caesar and sat down at his feet. He was kept in prison until Caesar’s triumph, and after the triumph he was executed (Dio).
