Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 BC)

Marcus Tullius Cicero: bust

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 BC) was consul in 63 BC, when he uncovered Catiline’s conspiracy. Rome’s greatest orator, author of letters that let us see behind the scenes of the age. With Caesar he shared a wary closeness: he saw tyranny in his plans, but admired his prose. In 58 BC Clodius accused him of killing conspirators without trial, and Cicero went into exile. He was killed on the triumvirs’ orders in 43 BC.
