Octavia the Younger (wife of Antony in 40–32 BC)

Octavia was Octavian’s sister, by a different mother, and had a reputation as a woman worthy of respect (Plutarch, Antony 31). In 40 BC she married Antony to seal the accord of the two rivals. When in 35 BC she wanted to join him with supplies for his army, she received a letter in Athens telling her to wait where she was (Antony 53). Afterward, despite her brother’s instruction, she stayed in her husband’s house in Rome and begged Octavian not to start a civil war on her account (Antony 54). In 32 BC Antony ordered her thrown out of it (Antony 57).
After his death she raised his children, including those by Cleopatra (Plutarch, Antony 87).
