Stephanus (died AD 96)

Bust of a Roman man of the Julio-Claudian period (1st century AD): marble, Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Venice. An image of the period; no portrait of this person survives.

Accused of embezzlement, he offered himself to the conspirators. Suetonius writes that for several days he wore his left arm in woolen bandages, as if it were injured, and hid a dagger in them. On September 18, AD 96, he handed the emperor a document and struck. Dio adds that he died right afterward, killed by men who knew nothing of the plot.
