Bust of a man of the Flavian era (AD 69–96): marble, Indianapolis Museum of Art. An image of the period; no portrait of this person survives.

Suetonius calls him a man of “contemptible inertia.” Domitian publicly designated his two small sons as successors and gave them the names Vespasian and Domitian. In AD 95, almost before his consulship had ended, he suddenly had him executed on a trivial suspicion; Dio gives the charge of “atheism.” Suetonius writes that this deed, more than any other, hastened the emperor’s own downfall.
