Antioch

Roman mosaic from Antioch, early 3rd century AD

Antioch was the capital of the province of Syria. In October AD 19 Germanicus died here, and his body lay in public in the forum before it was burned (Tacitus, Annals 2.73). From here Agrippina the Elder set out for Italy with the urn and the children (2.75). Today it is Antakya in Turkey. Before his death Germanicus accused the governor of Syria, Gnaeus Piso, of poisoning him (Annals 2.69–70).
