Pandateria

Ventotene (ancient Pandateria), the Roman harbor seen from the sea

Pandateria, today Ventotene, was an island of exile for women of the imperial house: Julia, Octavia and Agrippina the Elder were sent here. Agrippina was exiled in AD 29. She died in AD 33, on the anniversary of Sejanus’s fall. Tacitus notes that she refused food of her own accord, though she may have been denied it (Annals 6.25). Octavia, Nero’s wife, was also exiled here; she was killed in AD 62. The island belongs to the Pontine Islands. In AD 95 Flavia Domitilla was exiled here (Cassius Dio 67.14.3).
