Cremona

Plan of Cremona from Antonio Campi’s “Cremona fedelissima città et nobilissima colonia de Romani”, 1585. Roman Cremona burned down in AD 69.

A Roman colony founded during the war with Hannibal. In AD 69 it twice found itself at the center of the civil war. In the autumn, after the Second Battle of Bedriacum, also called the Battle of Cremona, Antonius Primus’s troops took the camp under its walls. The city surrendered, yet for four days it was plundered and burned; a fair was in progress at the time. Tacitus: “such was the end of Cremona, 286 years after its founding.” The inhabitants returned and rebuilt the temples and fora.
