Gades

Gades is today’s Cádiz in Spain. In Roman times a temple of Hercules stood here, in which, according to Suetonius, the quaestor Caesar saw a statue of Alexander the Great and sighed over his own idleness. The city was founded by the Phoenicians as Gadir, one of the oldest settlements in the western Mediterranean. Caesar came here as quaestor around 68 BC.
