Misenum

Cape Miseno, view from the sea

Miseno lies on a cape in the Bay of Naples and was the main base of the Roman fleet. In a villa that had once belonged to Lucullus, Tiberius died on March 16, AD 37 (Suetonius, Tiberius 73; Tacitus, Annals 6.50). The circumstances of his death are uncertain; the date and place are certain. In Latin it was called Misenum. The fleet stationed here was created by Augustus, and in AD 79 it was commanded by Pliny the Elder, who sailed from here toward the erupting Vesuvius.
