Geneva

Geneva lies where the Rhône flows out of the lake. In March 58 BC Caesar came here from Rome and ordered the bridge torn down to stop the Helvetii. Plutarch writes that he reached the Rhône in seven days. Caesar ordered a rampart and ditch built from the lake all the way to the Jura Mountains, nineteen thousand paces long, so the Helvetii had to go another way (Caesar, Gallic War 1.8).
