Death of Claudius (October 13, AD 54)

Bust of Emperor Claudius

Claudius died on October 13, AD 54, in Rome. Suetonius writes that he was poisoned, but there was disagreement over who did it and when. Tacitus and Cassius Dio give their own versions. Some scholars see a natural death, others poisoning. The conclusion: poisoning is possible but unconfirmed. The throne passed to Nero, then 16 years old.
