On July 1, AD 69, Tiberius Julius Alexander, prefect of Egypt, had the legions in Alexandria swear allegiance to Vespasian. The army of Judaea swore a few days later (Tacitus: July 3, Suetonius: July 11), and before mid-July the whole of Syria under the governor Mucianus. Vespasian counted July 1 as the first day of his reign. The legions from the Danube joined on their own and marched on Italy.
