In Alexandria in 48/47 BC Cleopatra met Caesar; Plutarch writes of a bedding sack, and the popular carpet is a later version. On August 1, 30 BC, Octavian entered the city. In AD 19 Germanicus distributed grain to starving Alexandria, for which Tiberius publicly rebuked him. The city was founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC; it was famed for its Library and the lighthouse on the island of Pharos.
