The Ides of March: The Last Walk

Transcript

It is nearly the fifth hour of the day. Calpurnia begs her husband to stay at home.

Rome goes about its business, and Caesar is carried in a litter to the hall of assembly.

Suetonius says Caesar passes the seer Spurinna and jokes: the Ides of March have come.

Spurinna answers quietly: they have come, but they have not yet gone.

Outside the hall, the senator Popillius Laenas stops him.

They whisper for a long time. The conspirators turn pale.

According to Plutarch, Laenas finally kisses Caesar’s hand and goes away.

Caesar enters the hall, and the Senate rises at the sight of him.

He walks to his chair beneath the statue of Pompey.
