Calpurnia (wife of Caesar from 59 BC)

Roman women at an altar, detail of the Domitius Ahenobarbus relief, c. 100 BC

Calpurnia, daughter of Lucius Piso, became Caesar’s wife in 59 BC. According to Plutarch, on the night before the assassination she dreamed she was holding her murdered husband in her arms, and in the morning she begged him to stay home. According to the version Plutarch cites from Livy, she dreamed that the pediment of their house had collapsed. Suetonius describes the dream similarly. Caesar did not listen to her.
