Julia Drusilla (d. AD 38)

Julia Drusilla (presumably): marble head, c. AD 37–40

Julia Drusilla was one of Caligula’s three sisters, daughter of Germanicus and Agrippina the Elder. Suetonius says she married Lucius Cassius Longinus, Dio that she married Marcus Lepidus. Both authors accuse the emperor of an incestuous relationship with his sisters, but this is the report of hostile sources and cannot be verified.

When she died in AD 38, Caligula declared mourning in which laughing, bathing and dining with one’s family were forbidden (Suetonius, Caligula 24). The Senate granted her divine honors as Panthea (Dio 59.11). From then on the emperor swore only by her divinity.
