Domitia Longina (empress AD 81–96)

Head of Domitia Longina, Capitoline Museums

Domitian took her from her first husband, the senator Aelius Lamia, around AD 70 — first as a mistress, then as a wife. After taking power he proclaimed her Augusta. Their son died in childhood and was declared a god.

Suetonius writes that the emperor divorced her because of her love for the actor Paris, and then took her back, claiming the people demanded it. Dio relates that he wanted to execute her and that Paris was killed in the street.

In AD 96, according to Suetonius, she knew of the plot. Dio gives a version in which she found the tablet with the names of the condemned and showed it to those under threat — noting that this is one of the stories. She outlived her husband by about thirty years.
