Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo (died AD 67)

Bust in the Capitoline Museums, once thought to be a portrait of Corbulo; current scholarship sees it as an unknown Roman of the 1st century BC.

Dio describes him as a general of the old style: strong, shrewd and honest toward friends and enemies. He fought the Parthians for Armenia. People hated Nero as much as they admired Corbulo and wanted him in Nero’s place — but he remained loyal. In AD 67 Nero summoned him to Greece with a letter full of tender words, and when the general stepped ashore at Cenchreae, the order for his death was waiting for him. He received it with the words “I deserved it.” His daughter Domitia Longina became Domitian’s wife.
