Gaius Julius Vindex (d. AD 68)

A denarius struck in Gaul in AD 68 by Vindex, governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, during his revolt against Nero: the helmeted head of Roma; the reverse shows Jupiter enthroned. Portable Antiquities Scheme. An image related to this person, not a portrait.

Vindex governed part of Gaul as propraetor. Suetonius writes that the Gauls began the revolt under his command (Nero 40). In edicts he called Nero a poor lyre player, which, according to Suetonius, hurt the emperor more than the treason itself (Nero 41). He died the same year. He came from the Gallic aristocracy, and his father was a senator. His army was defeated at Vesontio by the legions of Verginius Rufus, and he took his own life.
