Tiberius Gemellus (grandson of Tiberius, d. c. AD 37)

Tiberius Gemellus: marble head, 1st century AD

Tiberius Gemellus, son of Drusus and grandson of Tiberius, was a child when the emperor died. Tiberius’s will made him co-heir with Gaius, but the consuls annulled it on the pretext that the old man had not been of sound mind (Dio 59.1). Gaius adopted the boy and gave him the title Prince of the Youth.

After his own illness in AD 37, Gaius accused him of having waited for his death, and Suetonius adds the pretext of a cough medicine mistaken for an antidote (Caligula 23). Gemellus was killed. Tacitus describes how Tiberius had earlier predicted that Gaius would kill the boy (Annals 6.46).
