Lucius Cornelius Sulla (138–78 BC)

Bust of the so-called “Sulla”

Lucius Cornelius Sulla (138–78 BC): dictator, enemy of the young Caesar.

His aim: to wipe out the supporters of Marius and hand power back to the Senate. In 82 BC Sulla captured Rome, declared himself dictator and issued proscription lists condemning thousands to death. The young Caesar was also on the list and escaped punishment thanks to the intercession of his family and the Vestal Virgins. Sulla resigned power in 79 BC and died a year later.
