Marcus Claudius Marcellus (d. 23 BC)

Marcellus was the son of Octavia, Augustus’s sister. Tacitus writes that Augustus raised him as a young man to the dignity of priest and curule aedile (Annals 1.3). Suetonius says that he gave him his daughter Julia in marriage when Marcellus was barely more than a boy (Augustus 63).

In 23 BC, when Augustus was gravely ill, everyone expected him to choose Marcellus, but the ring went to Agrippa (Dio 53.30). Marcellus died soon after (Tacitus, Annals 1.3).
