At Actium on September 2, 31 BC, Octavian defeated Antony and Cleopatra. In the middle of the battle Cleopatra sailed away and Antony followed her; historians dispute whether it was flight or a plan to break the blockade. Antony’s army then went over to Octavian. Near the site Octavian later founded the city of Nicopolis, “city of victory,” in memory of the battle that ended the civil wars.
