Rubicon

Gustave Boulanger, Julius Caesar at the Rubicon (1854)

In January 49 BC Caesar stood at the Rubicon with one legion. The little river was the boundary of his province.

Crossing it with an army meant civil war. According to Suetonius, Caesar then said “iacta alea est,” that is, “the die is cast.” Scholars consider the scene and the words literary, but the crossing itself certain.
