Capri

In AD 26 Tiberius left Rome and spent the rest of his life on Capri, at the Villa Jovis. He ruled by letters to the Senate, while power in Rome was held by the prefect Sejanus. It was a letter from Capri, read on October 18, AD 31, that destroyed Sejanus. The reasons for his departure are disputed: Tacitus points to the influence of Sejanus and of the emperor’s mother, Livia.
