Antium (coastal town, today Anzio)

Coast at Anzio with the ruins of seaside buildings (Grotte di Nerone): painting, 1891

Antium lay on the coast south of Rome. Nero was born here in December AD 37 (Suetonius, Nero 6). In AD 59 Agrippina sailed from here for the festival of Minerva (Tacitus, Annals 14.4), and in July AD 64 Nero was here when the fire broke out (Annals 15.39). Today it is Anzio. Nero settled veterans of the Guard here and built a harbor (Suetonius, Nero 9).
