Alesia (52 BC)

Alesia lay on a hill in central Gaul, today near Alise-Sainte-Reine in France. In 52 BC Vercingetorix shut himself up in it. Caesar surrounded it with a siege, and when a relief force approached, he built a second wall, facing outward.
Velleius Paterculus wrote that what he accomplished at Alesia a man would scarcely dare to attempt, and only a god, it seems, could have carried through.
