New Carthage

The Roman theatre in Cartagena, ancient Carthago Nova (today).

New Carthage, today’s Cartagena, was one of the assize towns of Hispania Tarraconensis. In the spring of AD 68 Galba was holding court here when he received Vindex’s letters and intercepted Nero’s orders to have him killed. From a tribunal surrounded by portraits of Nero’s victims he let himself be proclaimed by the soldiers, but called himself only legate of the Senate and People of Rome (Suetonius, Galba 9–10).
