Mogontiacum

Mogontiacum, today’s Mainz on the Rhine, was the main camp of the army of Upper Germany. On January 1, AD 69, the legions of that army refused the oath to Galba, smashed his portraits and swore only to the Senate and People of Rome (Tacitus, Histories 1.55). Two days later they declared for Vitellius. Early in AD 89 the governor Lucius Antonius rebelled here against Domitian (Suetonius, Domitian 6).
