Nola (where Augustus died)

Augustus died at Nola, in the same room as his father Octavius, on August 19, AD 14 (Suetonius, Augustus 100). Tiberius, summoned by an urgent letter, hurried there; Tacitus writes that it is not known whether he found him still alive (Annals 1.5). The body was carried by night to Bovillae and from there to Rome. Augustus was then seventy-five. Suetonius records that before his death he asked his friends whether he had played the comedy of life well (Augustus 99).
