Philippi

At Philippi in 42 BC Octavian and Antony together defeated Caesar’s assassins. Revenge for Caesar had been taken, but the victors now had to divide power. Antony became ruler of the East. The city lay in Macedonia, on the Via Egnatia. Two battles were fought beneath its walls about three weeks apart; after their defeat Brutus and Cassius took their own lives. The victors later settled veterans here.
