Ostia

The Decumanus Maximus at Ostia Antica, photograph

Ostia was the port through which grain and goods from all over the empire reached Rome. Claudius expanded the harbor here. According to Tacitus, in AD 48 the emperor was at Ostia when in Rome his wife publicly “married” another man. Whether it was a real wedding or part of a plot, scholars do not know. Ostia lay at the mouth of the Tiber, about thirty kilometers from Rome.
