Battle of Alesia (52 BC)

Reconstruction of the ditch and Roman fortifications at Alesia

In the summer of 52 BC Caesar besieged Alesia, where Vercingetorix had taken refuge with his warriors. When a relief force came from all over Gaul, he built a second wall and fought on two fronts. Plutarch gives figures: one hundred seventy thousand in the town and three hundred thousand in the relief army. They are probably inflated.

After the victory Vercingetorix surrendered to Caesar.
