Gaius Cassius Longinus

Vincenzo Camuccini, The Death of Caesar (1804–1805)

Cassius was, together with Brutus, a leader of the conspiracy against Caesar. More than sixty conspirators followed them.

The conspirators feared the dictator’s royal ambitions. On March 15, 44 BC, they killed him in Rome, on the Ides of March.

In 42 BC Caesar’s assassins lost at Philippi to Octavian and Antony. Cassius committed suicide after the first battle of Philippi in 42 BC, according to tradition with the same dagger with which he had killed Caesar.
