Julius Caesar (lived 100–44 BC)

Julius Caesar: bust

Caesar gained power as a general. In 58–50 BC he conquered Gaul. In 49 BC he crossed the Rubicon. In 48 BC he defeated Pompey at Pharsalus. From February 44 BC he was dictator for life.

In 46 BC he reformed the Roman calendar. The Julian calendar derives from this reform. The best-known stories are the kidnapping by pirates, Cleopatra and “I came, I saw, I conquered.” Most of them rest on a single source.

He was killed on March 15, 44 BC, by a conspiracy of senators. They feared he wanted to become king. Suetonius counts 23 blows. The Latin words “Et tu, Brute?” do not appear in ancient sources.

His heir and adopted son was Augustus.
