Licinius Mucianus (governor of Syria from c. AD 67)

Head of a man of the Flavian era: marble, Metropolitan Museum of Art (13.229.5). An image of the period, not a portrait of Licinius Mucianus.

He had four legions in Syria. In AD 69 he reconciled with his neighbor Vespasian and persuaded him to fight for the throne; Tacitus reports his speech. He led part of the eastern army westward and advised Primus to wait. Tacitus sees jealousy of the victor’s glory in this.

He reached Rome after Vitellius’s death and held real power until the emperor arrived.
