Mark Antony (lived 83–30 BC)

Mark Antony: bust

Antony was a trusted officer of Caesar’s. After Caesar’s death he became a triumvir (43 BC) and ruler of the East. In 42 BC, together with Octavian, he defeated Caesar’s assassins at Philippi.

Hostile tradition makes him a drunkard, but Plutarch also shows a commander who, after the defeat in Parthia (36 BC), visited the wounded and shared with the army the hardships of the retreat. The scholar Schmaal considers the image of the drunkard largely Octavian’s propaganda.

After the defeat at Actium (September 2, 31 BC) the army deserted him. In 30 BC in Alexandria he took his own life.
