Publius Quinctilius Varus (d. AD 9)

Varus governed Germania in AD 9. Dio writes that he scattered the legions among auxiliary garrisons and did not believe warnings about Arminius and Segimer, who dined with him at the same table (56.19). Three legions perished with him (Suetonius, Augustus 23).

After the disaster, as Suetonius writes, Augustus did not cut his hair or beard and cried out for the return of the legions.
