Sextus Afranius Burrus (c. AD 1–62): praetorian prefect, adviser to Nero.

He wants the Guard to obey the emperor, not the emperor’s mother. Burrus ruled the state together with Seneca in the first years of Nero’s reign. He died in AD 62. Tacitus does not decide whether a throat illness killed him or poison, which many suspected Nero of giving him. After him the Guard passed to Faenius Rufus and Tigellinus, and Burrus’s departure meant the end of moderate government.
